the romney campaign has been running against obama. he rere pepeated the lie to cnn last week. there was a moment back in may when it became a scandal that a pro-mitt romney super pac had even been pitched the idea of bringing jeremiah wright back as an attack on president obama. that ad campaign was never picked up by the pro-romney super pac or the romney campaign itself. it was a scandal they had even been asked to pick up something that racially charged. but a few months later, the campaign picked up the welfare nonsense campaigning in a way that's divorced from the facts but that's loaded with enough sub text to knock you over in a still wind. and they picked up newt gingrich surrogate in his food stamps attack. no and now fox news and the pro-mitt romney drudge report just are going full bore on the jeremiah wright stuff, as o of right now. in 2008 the john mccain had a choice about whether or not they should campaign on really ove overtly racial appeals. things like the jeremiah wright attack. they chose not to in 2008. if the romney campaign is going to keep going ther

and if they would have known that, they never would have elected him. the efforts to make president obama's race sound like new news and to make it sound shocking are right now ramping up aggressively. last week, for example, here was newt gingrich going all out with it. if you want to make a racial reference bingo card from the '70s, the terms are basketball, performer, the word rhythm, and you'll want a special box for references to the president as sleepy or lazy. >> i'm assuming that some rhythm to barack obama that the rest of us don't understand. whether he needs large amounts of rest, whether he needs to go play basketball for awhile. i don't watch espn. i don't know what his rhythms are, but this is a guy who is a brilliant performer who may well get reelected at the present date. and who frankly happens to be a partial part-time president. he really is like e the substitute referees in the sense that he's not a real president. he doesn't do things presidents do. he doesn't worry about things presidents do. but he has the white house. he has enormous power. he'll go down in history as pr

's like turning now into an urban legend. by the middle of next week, people will say barack obama can't walk down the sidewalk without stumbling. i'm stunned by -- i mean, the republicans are excited, but i'm stunned by how democrats seem to keep getting more depressed every day. i've had people that have never voted republican in their life. >> right. >> saying i may have to do it this year. >> i think there's been that. there's also been a little bit of a back-and-forth about the jobs numbers that have made the republicans look desperate. but yes, overall, i think the debate had a terrible impact for the president and one that i think is surprisingly lasting. >> yeah, why is that? >> well, because a lot of people were watching and because you're wondering why things don't work in washington. and when you see two people go head to head and you see it be so starkly clear stylistically, you kind of wonder if that is brought home. >> that the president's disconnect -- >> yeah. so there's a lot of work to be done in the next debate. i mean, a lot of work. he's going to have to get his ha

the next four years. it's very striking in the obama team announcement his campaign the last five weeks which is what, the last four years something like that. >> if you elect obama the next four years than the last four years. that's true and for reelecting obama but it's not an inspiring forward-looking slogan about what mitt romney will do. obama has cast his lot and it's hard to blame the guy that wants to get pretty elected -- reelected with a approach to the democratic and independent constituencies to try to scare them about romney is just bush and all that. i don't think we are going to get the training he would like. i love little less pessimistic that means they can't govern effectively. i do think reality matters as we have been saying. we are going to hit a cliff in all kind of ways. but it is a real cliff in 2013 in the sense that you cannot sustain these obviously for too long they can't keep printing money and expect the world to take it or why treasury forever. the economy is slow and may be going into another dip. the foreign policy challenges. i think the next presiden

taken over the past week or so that show very stashl data. just two polls that came out yesterday in the last 24 hours. cnn shows president obama around 49% to 50%. mitt romney in the mid-40s or so. so that's actually been a very stable race so far. it will be interesting to see if our own nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows that same type of margin. and i will say and our pollsters make this point to us how stable this contest has been. we've remarked how it didn't change that much in the spring and summer. it changed a little bit in the conventions, but stability is probably going to be the one word we remember from this presidential race when we look back on it. >> wow. mark, thank you very much. great pleasure. i can't wait to see the rest of the results from in new poll on "nightly news" tonight. thanks, mark. >> thank. >> we mentioned at the top of the hour a judge in pennsylvania put a temporarily hold on a tough voter i.d. law ordering it not be enforced in this year's presidential election. there's another large group of potential voters, 4.5 million people according to

himself calls in the obama derangement syndrome. today just can't help themselves -- they just can't help themselves. i don't know how many of you heard about this. it goes on. last week the leading federal judge in montana sends out an e-mail on his official judicial e-mail account to his friends this joke about, um, little barack obama asking his mommy, you know, why am i black and you're white, and she says, well, for all i know about your father, i'm surprised he didn't bark when we had sex, meaning having sex with a dog. he did this on his official federal e-mail, and he said, you know, i don't usually send jokes out to friends, but i just thought this one was particularly funny. i mean, that's how sick these people are, and that's what we have seen over and over again. again, directed not so much against -- you can disagree with president obama's health plan, that it wasn't strong enough or that it's government takeover of health care, you can disdegree with him on taxes or whatever, but this is against him personally and trying to destroy and discredit him personally. the obama hat
